Spirituality, a definition ––
- “preoccupation with what concerns human inner nature (especially ethical or ideological values); inwardness, integrity, and inquisitiveness”
- “The state or quality of being dedicated to God, religion, or spiritual things or values, especially as contrasted with material or temporal values”
I was taken aback recently when the leader of a group I was with posed the question “What is spirituality?” I had an answer, but it got me to thinking of how often I note that we are learning to apply spiritual principles to everyday life… I wondered if anyone really knows what that means.
Spirituality is a universal opportunity to connect with the deeper meanings in life…. while it is often associated with religion, to me it is more personal than religion… everyone experiences spirituality in a their own way… it is that sense of connectedness, the realization that all is a Oneness, that every event and relationship, positive and negative, has meaning, purpose and value….
One source defined spirituality as “the quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.” You could say that spirituality is about seeking inward as opposed to outward…
Spirituality recognizes that there is a Higher Force at work and that this Force resides in all of us… we are made in God’s image which means that we are spiritual beings having human experiences, often faulty … life is about applying spiritual principles to every day activities… understanding that all has purpose, that we are all connected with each other, and with nature…
Spirituality is reflected in our values… spiritual people exhibit qualities like unconditional love, kindness, personal integrity, faithfulness, acceptance, responsibility, compassion, gratitude, selflessness…. while we may not be able to live up to the highest values every minute of every day, this is what was aspire to do…. we aspire to inspire….
For me, spirituality represents a way of life, a way of approaching the world… it is about accepting what is in the moment, knowing that it has meaning, opportunity for growth and enlightenment. Being spiritual means that I accept the idea that it is spirit that gives me life…. it is spirit that urges me on the path to be better, to lift myself up and do my best to help others lift their spirits….
What does spirituality mean to you?
