A Warning about Gurus

“Some of us turn to gurus to help us home. In the Hindu tradition, a distinction is made between two types: (1) sat-guru; (2) upa-guru. A sat-guru is a realized master. She is the way. Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma) and Neem Karoli Baba are said to be examples of sat-guru. An upa-guru is a door opener. They influence a shift in your consciousness. They show you some part of the way. Anyone - your mother, your cat, the homeless guy who tells you to get out of your head - can be an upa-guru. (more…)
