HOW I BECAME A GHOST WRITER
Global Psychics presents Art Myers, the well-known ghost-hunter, reporter and author. Art tells us about his life, his work and his new book
"Communicating with Animals: the Spiritual Connection Between People and Animals".
How does a person end up as a writer about ghosts? How do you go on to do a book like my new one - "Communicating With Animals" - which considers the oneness of the universe, among other things?
Just lucky, I guess.
My father never pointed me in any particular spiritual direction. Although as I look back on it, he himself lived a very spiritual life. Every morning I would go by his bedroom door and he'd be standing there, his head in his hand, praying. At least, that's what I presumed he was doing.
However, he was not conventionally religious. I recall his telling me that an agnostic was someone who just said "I don't know" - about religion and theology. And he indicated that wasn't a bad idea. Not that I went along with all of my father's ideas - for God's sake, he voted Republican! But till my middle years I drifted along with little or no interest in any other world except this one we're currently embodied in.
Until met Charlotte.
I met her at a dinner party. I was a columnist on a newspaper in New Jersey at the time. A woman approached me in an art gallery, announced she was a reader of mine, and invited me to a dinner party she was giving in a couple of weeks. I rarely turn down invitations to parties, and particularly at that time, since I was constantly looking for amusing chatter to put in my column.
Charlotte was my dinner partner. It quickly dawned on me that our hostess was playing Dolly Levi - the matchmaker. I asked Charlotte what she did for a living.
"I'm a professional psychic," she said.
"Well, well," I said, "I've never met a psychic. Will you do something psychic with me."
"Okay," she said, "Your left calf is stiff and it's slightly larger than your right calf."
This was the beginning of a new world for me. She was absolutely right. A few months before I had been hit by a car and my leg was slightly broken. My leg was now healed, but it was in the condition that Charlotte had described. But there was no way she could have known about this accident.
After dinner, we walked around the block, and she gave me a rundown on my life, almost year by year, which was astonishingly accurate.
I was frightened of this woman, but she fascinated me. A couple of days later, I called her home to ask her if she would go to dinner with me. The line was busy, so I hung up. About ten seconds later the phone rang. It was Charlotte. She said:
"This is your friendly neighborhood seer. You were calling me, weren"t you."
Charlotte pulled this trick on me several times during the time I knew her. She could do many extraordinary things. She was the first psychic had I known, so I had no basis for comparison, but in my books, Charlotte was a world-class psychic.
The First Seance
Two weeks after I met Charlotte, she invited me to a séance. About ten people were there. She asked, "Does anyone here know a Henry."
I said that I did. My Uncle Henry, Aunt Ethel and my father had brought me up.
Henry had died about two years before. He lived in Buffalo, and I was then living in New York City. I was broke, as writers usually are, and instead of flying up there to the funeral I sent flowers.
Charlotte said, "Your uncle is here, and he's very angry that you didn't go to his funeral."
I had never said anything about my family to Charlotte during the two weeks I had known her.
As the séance continued, my aunt, my father and my grandmother also came through. Charlotte described each of them in detail. My grandmother lived in a high place, Charlotte said - actually, she had owned a farm in the Catskill Mountains. She spoke with a German accent, which Charlotte noted. My aunt had curly hair. She wanted to know why I was not married, which was typical. My father turned away, saying, "He doesn't want to talk to me." As an adolescent, I had "punished" my father by rarely speaking to him because I wasn't happy, although I knew it wasn't his fault. To this day, my father often comes through when I go to a psychic, especially with one psychic I know well. His name happens to be Myers, although we're no relation. But many, many years after my father died, he is still wandering around the astral plane or wherever, berating himself - "I didn't do enough for him," he says.
From the Occult to Animal Communications
I became fascinated with the occult, and bought book after book on the subject. In 1980, I wrote one of my own, "The Ghost Hunters." Since then I've written five more books on ghosts.
About three years ago, I wanted to move on, I wanted to write books that had a more spiritual content, as compared with what might be termed a psychic content. I felt that my books about ghosts concentrated on the astral plane, the place immediately above this one. (Actually, I may have this all wrong. I'm pretty sure I've been on these various planes, but I don't remember them. So if anyone knows better, feel free to correct me.) My problem was that I am not much aware of other planes - I do not consider myself psychic, or intuitive. I am very analytical, I come very much from the left brain, the logical side of the brain, as opposed to the right side, the intuitive. I knew I was going to have a difficult time writing about the spiritual.
I decided to do this book about talking with animals in December of 1994. I know a man named Tom Csere, who is a student of the occult. He had a club that met in Southbridge, MA. I had spoken there about ghosts a couple of times. That day in 1994, he called me up and told me of an item he had seen in the New York Post. An Englishman had written part of a book entitled "The Horse Whisperer," It was a novel - fiction - and he had received a $3,000,000 advance from a New York publisher, and another $3,000,000 payment from Robert Redford, who is planning to make a movie of it.
"WhyTom," I said, "I know a woman who can REALLY speak with horses. Tom reminded me that I had first heard this woman speak at his club. Her name is Nancy Regalmuto, an extraordinary mystic, who has helped me with my ghost books over the years. I began to work with Nancy to write a book about her.
As we went along, I discovered that hundreds of people are now communicating with animals - hearing them speak words, sometimes communicating through pictures, or emotions, or physical sensations. Some of these people are effective in healing animals, either physically or emotionally.
I soon discovered a startling fact - we can all do this.
It cetainly helps if you're a powerful mystic like Nancy, but the operative fact is that we are ALL psychics, we all have the power of telepathy, for example. Many of the professional communicators in my book are so-called ordinary people - like all of us. We just forgot we were psychic somewhere along the way. But we can relearn it - or a better way to put it might be - we can remember it.
I feel this is the most important book I've written, or possibly ever will. I think it will be helpful to animals AND to ourselves. Among other things, it's a how-to book about communicating telepathically and that's very much worth learning how to do.

"Communicating with Animals: the Spiritual Connection Between People and Animals" is both inspired and inspirational - a must read for any animal-lover, pet owner, or anyone on the quest for higher consciousness.
